Mixing Old and New

On this page I hope to give you tips and tricks and photos of how I have mixed my vintage items with new, hopefully giving you some ideas and inspirations for your own home.  Furnishing your home with found objects makes a connection between the past and the present and accepts that being well loved and well used will show some signs of wear and tear.  Look for overlooked treasures and then adapt them to your home's unique "look".

Over a period of a few months, while "treasure hunting", I picked up many old wooden candlestick holders, usually for 50 cents to 75 cents.  I painted them all a white or creamy color and distressed them. Then I placed  them on an old silver quilted metal tray from the 1940's that I found on eBay for a very low price.  The whole display sits on my very modern and contemporary glass topped coffee table.  It's so very pretty at night when all the candles are lit.  In the Fall season I add a white pumpkin to the display.

Stacking is a great thing to do and gives you extra storage.  Here I used an antique shabby white trunk I found years ago.  On top of that is a drawer from an antique sewing machine that was refurbished.

The black shutter in the background came from my childhood home.  When Mom and Dad updated I took the old shutter, painted it black and voila..... it makes a great place to display artwork.  The artwork here is pieces of an antique cutter quilt that was black and white.  The pieces were framed in simple black wood frames.

And finally, as an accent, I placed a small vintage glass lamp, with a new black shade, and used my old college books as a riser.  A fun thing to do is recover old books in vintage sheet music.  The little lamp makes a great night light and very soft evening light.

I guess you could say my home is an eclectic mix of styles leaning towards country French.  My kitchen has a grape theme.  Around the kitchen curtain window valance I have woven grapevine leaves, vines and grapes.  On the walls are hand painted grapevines and grapes.  Can you spot the bird nest and bird hiding in the grape vines?

I do love the look of the old white ironstone pieces.....they are so classic and timeless.  The old pitchers are so pretty when used as vases.  This one is simply filled with wild flowers from our fields.... wild yarrow, queen anne's lace and daisies.

When you are treasure hunting look for charming old saucers and plates with chips, dings, or cracks.  You may not want to use them for serving on but they look charming placed under small plants.  The one pictured below is a pretty old Limoges plate with roses in the pattern.  Looks pretty under the orchid pot.

This old wicker chair was a steal for $10.00.  Love, love the aqua paint.  The other day I did a little makeover on it.  I didn't like the old cushion that was on it.  So I covered two sleeping pillows with vintage embroidered pillowcases and voila....a new look for the summer.
